HAVERHILL – Think you can’t mix business with pleasure? Don’t tell that to Julian Rich. The president and CEO of Penacook Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has found a way to incorporate one of the greatest joys in his life into his work day. Better yet, he’s able to share that joy with residents. Rich recently adopted Jack, a giant schnauzer/Irish wolfhound mix, who is now often seen ambling around Penacook with Rich, cozying up to residents who enjoy his warmth and playfulness. “Within an hour of meeting him, my heart was captured,” said Rich, who set out to adopt a pet that he could bring to work with him. Jack had the ideal personality. Although Jack is not a certified therapy dog, his presence has had tremendous therapeutic benefits and Rich is actually considering having him certified as a therapy dog. “Jack loves people and eagerly looks forward to his encounters with residents,” said Rich. Judging from the broad smiles and outpouring of affection Jack’s presence always engenders, the feeling is mutual. “He visits with residents both in their rooms and in common areas and he seems to just instinctively know how to best interact with each person.” Located at 150 Water St., the 160-bed Penacook Place is the only not-for-profit nursing and rehabilitation facility serving the city of Haverhill. Penacook Place has a professional staff of 230 employees. Contributions that support the purchase of new equipment, renovations and resident activities can be made to the Friends of Penacook Fund, c/o Penacook Place, 150 Water St., Haverhill, MA, 01830. |
